As Jesus and the disciples approached Jerusalem, they came to the town of Bethphage on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of them on ahead. “Go into the village over there,” he said. “As soon as you enter it, you will see a donkey tied there, with its colt beside it. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone asks what you are doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will immediately let you take them.”
This took place to fulfill the prophecy that said,
“Tell the people of Jerusalem, ‘Look, your King is coming to you. He is humble, riding on a donkey—riding on a donkey’s colt.’”
The two disciples did as Jesus commanded. They brought the donkey and the colt to him and threw their garments over the colt, and he sat on it. Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting,
“Praise God for the Son of David! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God in highest heaven!
The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. “Who is this?” they asked.

Who Is This?
Imagine that you wanted something really badly, but you didn’t know when you were going to get it. Your parents promised you that one day you were going to get this thing that was going to make you really happy… but they didn’t tell you when. Now imagine how much joy you would feel if, after waiting for months or maybe even for years, your parents walked into your room and said, “today is the day.”
This is how the people of Jerusalem felt on the day that Jesus walked into the city. They had been waiting for this day for a long time. For nearly 600 years, the people of Jerusalem had been under the control of foreign empires who ruled over them harshly, and often persecuted them for their faith in God. But God had promised them a long time ago that one day, a king would come to save them and set them free.
When Jesus entered through the gates of Jerusalem, the people welcomed Him as the king that they had been waiting for. They put down robes and branches from the trees on the road in front of Him as He rode in, and praised God for finally sending them their King and Savior.
Jesus was the king they were waiting for, but a different king than they were expecting. He came to save them and set them free, but not from foreign empires. He came to set them free from sin and death, and to give them and the rest of the world the opportunity of a new life – one that would extend into eternity with Him.
The people that knew Jesus best knew who He was and why He was there. But everyone else who saw Him ride into Jerusalem that day couldn’t help but ask, “Who is this?”
Who is Jesus to you - someone you know or someone you’ve heard of?
